Sony showcased Cristal LED Display, a 55-inch prototype TV that actually use miniature light-emitting diode (LED) instead of pixels. Until now LED TVs are actually an LCD that uses LED as light source.
Sony's prototype uses 6 million pieces of LED, each of 2 million pieces for red, green and blue (RGB) are mounted directly in front of the display, which according to Sony to increase the efficiency of light output. Sony claims the technology is more superior when compared to LCD and plasma, with higher contrast, wider overall color, and a wider viewing angle.
Although this TV is still far from mass production, Sony claimed the future Crystal Display will be used in a lot of good use of professional and consumer use. Sony also emphasized the LED is not replacing OLED TV.
